**Postdoctoral position in exposure to and impacts of extreme weather events**

Are you interested in working with exposure to and impacts of extreme weather events, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.

**The Department of Earth Sciences** is Sweden’s most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. It offers a broad range of expertise that can contribute to solving important societal issues.

Earth is a dynamic and constantly changing planet. To understand how this planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of disciplines, including rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development.

Our research combines natural sciences and technology with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. More than 300 people from over 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland.

Our six research divisions:

• Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Palaeobiology • Wind Energy

For more information see: www.uu.se/earthsciences

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at: LUVAL.

You will contribute to an EU project focussing on the compilation of data and the attribution of extreme weather events and their impacts. You will be part of the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes).

**Duties**

You will work with data collection on and analysis of exposure to, and the effects of, extreme climate events in the mid-latitudes. The work will cover various categories of events, such as heatwaves, cold spells, storms, and droughts. The aim is to link the physical events with exposure and impacts in a harmonized database. Teaching/supervising duties up to 20% are possible on a voluntary basis. You will be based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, but will be expected to travel both nationally and internationally.

**Requirements**

PhD degree in climate science, meteorology, natural hazards, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, data science or related disciplines or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above subjects. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who has a strong self-drive, works independently and takes initiative. You should enjoy developing and testing new ideas. You should also have a demonstrated ability to communicate your research in a timely manner through peer-reviewed articles in leading international academic journals, and have excellent spoken and written communication skills in English. You need to have good cooperation skills as the work involves collaborations with different international research networks and centres.

**Additional qualifications**

Previous experience with analysis of large climate data and work with extreme weather impacts are a merit. We place particular weight on the quality of peer-reviewed publications.

**About the employment**

The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date 1st November 2026 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
