Master's thesis: Implementation of Higher-Layer Protocols for 6G Ambient IoT

**Background**
6G is expected to transform wireless connectivity by enabling extremely high data rates, ultralow latency, and the capacity to support vast numbers of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, well beyond what 5G can provide. A key pillar of this vision is Ambient 6G IoT, which aims to seamlessly integrate billions of devices into the network and unlock new applications across sectors such as smart cities, precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, and advanced healthcare. These massive deployments will also generate rich data resources that fuel AI models, digital twins, and emerging 6G services such as holographic communication and immersive extended reality experiences.

**Project Description**
The goal of this thesis is to design and implement a prototype of selected higher-layer protocols for Ambient 6G IoT systems. The work will involve implementing parts of the protocol stack on both the device side, representing constrained IoT nodes, and on the network side, representing a base station or gateway. The implementation will make it possible to experiment with the protocols in a realistic setting and evaluate their behavior under practical constraints.

The project will include implementing a subset of the higher-layer Ambient IoT protocols and integrating them into a working prototype. The implementation will then be used to study system characteristics such as protocol overhead, communication latency, and resource usage on constrained devices, including memory consumption. The results are expected to provide insights into the practical feasibility of these protocols and help inform future research and development in Ambient IoT systems for 6G.

**Qualifications**
The thesis is suitable for students interested in networking, IoT systems, distributed systems, or embedded development, and who enjoy implementing and experimenting with new protocols. Programming experience in languages such as C, Python, or similar environments is beneficial.

**What We Offer**

- A chance to work on a scientifically novel project that is defining the future of Ambient IoT for 6G.
- Hands-on experience with state-of-the-art IoT and 5G frameworks.
- Access to RISE’s advanced resources, unique datasets, and test environments.
- Opportunities for professional growth and networking, including potential PhD opportunities.
- A friendly and dynamic research environment with experienced supervisors.

**Terms**

- Scope: The thesis usually comprises 15 or 30 credits (hp/ECTS).
- Start Date: Spring 2026, or by agreement.
- Location: RISE, Kista, Stockholm, with the possibility for some remote work.
- Compensation: In line with RISE guidelines for strategically important projects, a compensation of 1333 SEK/credit is offered upon completion and approval of the thesis.
